New York Real Estate Continuing Education Requirements

New York real estate agents and brokers must complete 22.5 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years to renew their license.

The required CE courses include:

  • 2 hours on cultural competency
  • 2 hours on implicit bias
  • 3 hours on fair housing and/or discrimination in real estate
  • 1 hour on law of agency (2 hours for first-time renewals)
  • 2.5 hours on ethical business practices
  • 1 hour on recent legal matters
  • 11 hours of electives

Important Changes

  1. The 15-year broker exemption has been removed. As of July 1, 2021, all brokers, including those previously exempt, must complete CE requirements
  2. Attorneys admitted to the New York State bar remain exempt from CE requirements

Course Completion

  • Licensees must pass a final exam to receive credit for CE courses
  • Courses can be taken online or through approved providers
  • CE hours must be completed before the license renewal date, which occurs every two years

Licensees cannot renew early to avoid education requirements. It's important to complete all required CE hours to maintain an active real estate license in New York.
