Complete prelicense education

Virginia requires prelicense education even for reciprocity applicants: 60 hours for salespersons and 180 hours for brokers. As a reciprocity applicant, you submit verification of your 60-hour prelicense course.

• Broker experience: actively engaged full time (averaging 40 hours a week) for 36 of the 48 months before applying.
• Salesperson applicants have no experience requirement.

Broker applicants can review the chart of acceptable out-of-state broker education on DPOR’s pre-license page.

Pass the Virginia state portion of the PSI exam

If your out-of-state license is unexpired, you only need to pass the state portion. Reciprocity applicants register by email, fax or mail – there is no online option. Exam scores are valid for one year.

Register through PSI: choose Government/State Licensing Agencies › Virginia › VA Real Estate, then VA Salesperson or VA Broker.

Get fingerprinted for your background check

Background checks expire after 45 days, so your complete application must reach the Board within 45 days of fingerprinting or you’ll need to be fingerprinted again for an additional fee.

• Virginia residents must be fingerprinted at a PSI location in Virginia.
• Non-residents are strongly encouraged to use a Virginia PSI location to speed up the background check. If you can’t, contact the Board.

Submit a complete application

Download the most recent application from DPOR (salesperson / broker). A license can’t be issued until the application is complete and accurate:

• Every question answered
• All documents and the fee attached
• Background check no more than 45 days old
• Certification of licensure from every state where you are or have been licensed, dated less than 60 days before the Board receives your complete application
