Out-of-State Continuing Education Credit
The DPOR Board will accept up to 8 hours of approved continuing education courses that a broker or experienced salesperson completed in another state, as long as the licensee holds a current real estate license in that other state and completed these continuing education courses during the current two-year license term.
In order to receive these 8 hours of Continuing Education elective credits in the “Real Estate Related Subjects” category, a licensee must submit:
- a copy of the current out-of-state license (with its expiration date) AND
- a copy of EACH Continuing Education course completion certificate.

Virginia Real Estate State Continuing Education (CE) Requirements
Experienced Salespersons must complete 16 hours of Continuing Education to renew their licenses. Of these 16 hours, renewing experienced salespersons must take:

The remaining 8 hours for both brokers and experienced salespersons may be in Real Estate Related Subjects (electives) or in the required Continuing Education subjects already referenced. These Continuing Education requirements also apply to inactive brokers and experienced salespersons who apply to activate their licenses.
CE Credit Uploading: CE Credits are uploaded electronically directly to the DPOR Real Estate Commission website. Once the credits are uploaded, you receive an email receipt of your CE credit completion. The State requires Real Estate Educators to upload the completed CE credit within five to seven days after the completed class date. Tristar Academy uploads the completed credits within 24-48 hours after completion along with a certificate of completion.

License Renewal Date: Licenses issued under this chapter for salespersons, brokers, and firms shall expire two years from the last day of the month in which they were issued, as indicated on the license, except concurrent broker licenses which shall expire on the same date as the original broker license.
